War Veteran gets a home at Summerwood
Last week, Sgt. Richard Massimino and his family's dream came true when Texas Congressman Gene Green presented the keys to his new home in Summerwood thanks to hard work by the Helping a Hero's Wounded Home Hero Program.
Construction on the home began in June when Newland donated a lot and Perry Homes constructed the home. Seventh grade students from the Galena Park Independent School District banded together and raised $68,500 and the Northshore Rotary Club raised $100,000 to help pay for the home.
On his third tour in Iraq, Sgt. Massimino career as a diesel mechanic with the U.S. Marine Corps ended when his back was fractured in a mortar attack. Faced with being forced to retire from the Marines and having nowhere to go with his wife, Natasha, and his three children, Massimino was at his wits end. That's when he received a call from Helping a Hero's Wounded Home Hero program, which facilitates construction of homes for severely wounded veterans. Helping a Hero helped Massimino apply for a home and in April 2007 he got the call that he was chosen to get a home.
At the key ceremony, Sgt. Massimino said, "If it wasn't for them we'd be homeless. For people out of the kindness of their hearts donate money and build a home for me and my family is one of the greatest feelings in the world. Words can't express how great it makes me and my family feel."
Hats off to the Texas team for your efforts in making such a difference in Sgt. Massimino and his family's life.
New-home variety in Summerwood is showcased in a central Model Home Village, offering one-stop shopping for 12 decorated model homes, adjacent to the Summerwood New Home Information Center. Summerwood has additional model home parks displaying low-maintenance townhomes and luxury estate homes.
"Summerwood offers both convenience and variety for new-home shoppers," said Theresa Crowley, marketing director for Newland Communities, developer of Summerwood. "Not only will home shoppers save time by visiting the Model Home Village, but a new drive time study has found that Summerwood offers a location that is convenient to major employment centers throughout the Houston area."
Completed by Metrostudy, the drive time study found that Summerwood is a 16-mile drive from the Port of Houston and Ship Channel complex, 14 miles from Bush Intercontinental Airport, and 20 miles from downtown Houston.
Summerwood amenities include three major community centers, including Club Summerwood. Featuring a lodge-style clubhouse designed for community gatherings, Club Summerwood also has a "great lawn" for outdoor events, a splash pad and a playground.
Other amenities throughout Summerwood include 17 acres of lakes, tennis courts, a fitness center and miles of greenbelt trails. Summerwood has many neighborhood parks, including Lakeview Park, providing Lake Houston views and access.
Summerwood has an onsite elementary school, Summerwood
Elementary, along with a private preschool, Primrose School of
Summerwood.
Two new Humble ISD schools will open to serve Summerwood beginning in 2009, with the opening of the new Summer Creek High School next August. Summer Creek High School is located on a site, just across Beltway 8 from Summerwood, on a future planned extension of W. Lake Houston Parkway. On a 67-acre site, this 435,000-square-foot campus will house a comprehensive, 9th through 12th grade high school with capacity for 3,200 students. The campus will include athletic facilities and playing fields, an auditorium, natatorium, career and vocational education facilities, food court and learning resource center, and parking for students, staff and visitors.
A new middle school and YMCA campus are planned to open inside Summerwood in August, 2010. Still to be named, Middle School No. 8 will have over 175,000 square feet and will accommodate up to 1,050 students. Eighteen acres of sports fields and play fields will also be constructed, and the school will be adjacent to a new 34,059-square-foot YMCA building. According to district spokesperson Karen Collier, students will use some of the YMCA facility during school hours, and the YMCA will also offer the organization's usual host of individual and community programs.
