Summerwood to be new home of City of Houston Fire Station 105
The City of Houston has purchased a 1.5-acre site in the 1,500-acre Summerwood master-planned community for Fire Station 105, which will be home to six firefighters, a fire truck and a paramedic unit when it opens in mid-2007.
Purchased from Newland Communities, the developer of Summerwood, the fire station site is located at the southeast corner of W. Lake Houston Parkway and Deussen Parkway.
Construction of the fire station is planned to begin this summer, with a completion date projected for next summer, according to Barry Whitehead, project manager for the Houston Fire Department.
Fire Station 105 will be initially built as a two-bay station, and will have the capacity to expand to four bays with additional firefighting and medical equipment as needed. The station will be built with complete living quarters for the firefighters, who will staff the facility around the clock.
Architecture for Fire Station 105 is designed to blend into its surroundings at Summerwood. An initial rendering of the station shows a stucco building with a varied roofline, reflecting the community's residential character. Once completed, the fire station will be landscaped with native plants, Whitehead said.
He added that the City of Houston Fire Department has the highest rating from the Insurance Service Organization, providing homeowners served by the department with the opportunity to get the most favorable insurance rates.
The announcement of plans to construct Fire Station 105 fulfills a vision that was established in the original master plan for Summerwood, said Tina Berry, regional marketing director for Newland Communities.
"The master plan envisions a civic core located along W. Houston Parkway, between Summerwood Lakes Dr. and Deussen Parkway," Berry said. "Fire Station 105 will join a number of completed amenities in this area, including Summerwood Elementary School and a private preschool, along with a sports field, lakes, parks and retail services."
With its main entrance located at Beltway 8 and W. Lake Houston Parkway, Summerwood offers new homes priced from the $150,000s to $500,000s. Summerwood has been named a 2006 "Community of the Year" by the Greater Houston Builders Association, winning in the "small" (under 2,500 acres) category.
